C. Warren Derrick, MD/Helen G. Lynch Champion of Children Award presented to Robert Hubbird, MD

Robert “Bob” Hubbird, MD, was awarded the C. Warren Derrick, MD/Helen G. Lynch Champion of Children Award on February 17, 2026. The award was presented by Prisma Health Children’s Hospital at a reception hosted by Champions Society, a Prisma Health Midlands Foundation annual giving society that supports the children’s hospital. The prestigious annual award recognizes individuals who display extraordinary devotion and dedication to the welfare and well-being of our community’s children.
Hubbird was recognized for his decades of treating critically ill children and for training medical students and residents. Caughman Taylor, MD, Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands senior medical director, thanked Hubbird for his instrumental role in establishing full-time pediatric intensivist coverage; a specially trained Pediatric Transport Team; and the Pediatric Sedation Unit. Recently retired from Prisma Health, Hubbird formerly served as Assistant Medical Director of Prisma Health Children’s Hospital – Midlands and as Medical Director of Pediatric Critical Care Services.
Erin Ricker, MD, noted Hubbird’s impact on the region’s sickest children. “His contributions have been vital in expanding access to care and improving our organization’s ability to save the lives of our community’s most vulnerable. He himself has administered life-saving care to many children during his career, all while inspiring those he works alongside to do the same.”
In her nomination, Ricker recognized Hubbird’s far-reaching impact on residents. “He has been recognized more than 20 times by Pediatric and Emergency Medicine residents as Teacher of the Year. He developed ‘KwikKardz,’ a set of cards that have condensed important pediatric physiology concepts. A common phrase lovingly echoed in the halls when teaching is ‘if only someone would have put that on a card and laminated it for you…oh wait, Dr. Hubbird DID THAT!”
Hubbird reflected on his team and the expansion of critical care services in recent decades.
“It has been my honor to spend the bulk of my career here and to see the growth in the Children’s Hospital and the incredible expansion of services for the children in the state and the Midlands in particular. My colleagues, consultants, nursing staff, techs, administration and all the support staff at Children’s Hospital are exemplary. I am proud of having been a small part of our growth and care delivery over the last 34 years.”
The C. Warren Derrick, MD/Helen G. Lynch Champion of Children Award is voted on by the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital Administrative Medical Committee. The award initially was known as the Robbie Benson Award, but in 2001, the name was changed to honor C. Warren Derrick, MD, a founding physician of Children’s Hospital and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, and in memory of Helen G. Lynch, vice president of patient care services. Lynch is fondly remembered for her insight, energy, strength and advocacy for children.
