21 Years of Advancing Health Care in the Midlands
I think we can all agree that a lot has changed in the past 21 years. One thing that has not changed, however, is Prisma Health Midlands Foundation’s mission to inspire philanthropic support to enhance health care in the Midlands region. Over 21 years, 144,529 donors have donated more than $125 million to our Foundation.
In celebration of the Foundation’s 21 years, we are looking back, with gratitude, at a few ways donors have helped us support Prisma Health-Midlands.
1) Joyce Martin Hill Behavioral Health Center dedicated to behavioral health patients.
In 2013, Prisma Health, then known as Palmetto Health, unveiled its new emergency mental health center. Inspired by Joyce Martin Hill’s dream of improving care for individuals with mental health emergencies and her donation of $800,000, 10 individual rooms and two special consult rooms were created at Prisma Health Richland Hospital.
2) 30th Walk for Life and Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon, 5K + 10K
The 30th annual Walk for Life and Famously Hot Half Pink Marathon saw major changes last year. Instead of one sea of pink, families and friends got together on their own – not just in Columbia, but in 31 states and three countries! The event, though virtual, raised more than $326,000 for Prisma Health Breast Center.
3) OmniTom Portable CT Scanner
When someone has a stroke or brain injury, every second counts. When donors gave $600,000, an OmniTom® Portable CT Scanner was funded for Prisma Health Richland Hospital. It’s the only 16-Slice Portable CT Scanner in the state and helps save lives in the most critical moments by producing immediate, real-time imaging for more rapid care responses.

4) New Wheels for Precious Cargo
When the smallest of children need specialized care, the Pediatric Transport team at Prisma Health-Midlands jumps into action. Last year, it became evident that the team needed an updated ambulance to continue its lifesaving work. Thus, a campaign was created to fund a new vehicle with added room and new features to support the transportation of premature twins. By the start of 2021, more than $425,000 was raised to fully fund the new vehicle. The Pediatric Transport team is expecting its new wheels to hit the road in August 2021.

5) $21.5 Million For Our Local Children’s Hospital
On Sept. 27, 2005, our Foundation launched a $20 million capital campaign to renovate and expand Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. On May 20, 2008, our community helped us celebrate $21.5 million raised as we opened the doors to South Carolina’s first freestanding children’s hospital. Today, Prisma Health Children’s Hospital—Midlands has more than 150,000 patient visits each year. When you step into Children’s Hospital, you can feel the love our community has for this special place just for kids.
